Another cool story appeared on the feeds today, about how Trey Harrison, developer of Salvation, a “visual programming tool used to create custom video mixing and lighting displays” he’d been working on for the past 6 years, found his work cracked and released for free by the crackers at BlueBeta3d.

Uh wait. What’s so cool about that?

Well, it looks like Trey managed to get a warez group to stop cracking and releasing his work for free on the internet by simply emailing them.

Won’t fill you in on the details of the story here, but with all the suing going on, has anyone tried actually politely asking the pirates to stop? It certainly worked for Trey here.

Hi, you guys have recently released a pirated version of my software called
“Salvation”. I’m not very surprised - actually I’m flattered - but I was
wondering if we could arrange a meeting to discuss the possibility of you
not doing this any more?

Best,
Trey Harrison

Hi Trey,

We appreciate your comments and understand the role of developers ,
we only released it so many people who may not have access or
privileges could try this and learn. Hopefully its given more
global coverage. Apologies for any grievance it may have caused. We
also noted your comments and will not release this again. Good Luck
and best wishes for future developement.

I don’t know about you, but these BlueBeta3D guys sure sound pretty civil. Good on you, Trey, for asking politely, instead of threatening another espisode of Revenge of the Lawyers. And for the BB3D team, thanks for letting all of us know that there’s a friendly face behind the warez. It’s nice to hear from the other side of the fence now and then =)
